An ASN is assigned to an autonomous system, a network or group of networks managed under one routing policy. ISPs, cloud platforms, and large companies each run their own autonomous system, and each one gets its own ASN from a regional registry. ARIN defines an autonomous system as a group of IP prefixes run by one or more network operators that maintain a single, clearly defined routing policy.

Routers use ASNs to know which network owns which IP range. Cloudflare compares an autonomous system to a town post office that hands off mail until it reaches the right destination.

For proxy users, the ASN associated with an IP address is one of the first things a target site checks. A residential proxies connection routes through an ASN tied to a real household ISP, so it blends in with normal traffic.
